Sweding the Once-trailer

I still haven't seen Oscar success Once unfortunately as time and money, well money, hasn't been on my side lately. Therefore it's good to have friends who like to swede.

Q. Sweding? What's that you ask.

A. Re-making something from scratch using whatever you can get your hands on.

The term comes from Michel Gondry's new film, Be Kind Rewind.

For a plot outline, press here.

To illustrate my point, have a look at the original trailer for Once:

And then have a gander at the "sweded" version, made by the good folks of Lightside Media:

Great stuff. Thanks John.

Related music:

Once soundtrack - Oscar for best achievement in music written for motion pictures, original song.

Also,

Glen Hansard, lead actor of Once, also fronts The Frames, which according to my friend and Irish consultant, John, is a band worth checking out.

Update: My sources have just informed me that the sweded version seen above just won THIS. Congratulations to all involved.

Heartbroken?

Then listen to some mending tunes.

My recommendations:

Great Lake Swimmers - pretty much whatever you can get hold of, although I do feel obligated to highlight one of their songs as the ultimate wallow sing-along song = Moving, Shaking.

Great Lake Swimmers

Also.

Yeasayer's new album, All Hour Cymbals, is perfect for those "I Don't Seem To Be Able To Get My Ass Of The Couch" moments. It just runs through ever so smoothly.

Try as well:

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky

Scout Niblet - Kidnapped By Neptune

and

Bat For Lashes - Fur And Gold

Bat For Lashes - What's A Girl To Do?

Granted, my music recommendations for the sad ARE a tad bit melancholic, but the truth is, my forsaken, that the happy tunes will only make you feel worse in the long run. Just get that burning heartache over with and slip into the sadness full on. Don't feel the need to bottle it all up, pretending to be OK, by forcing some disco or dare I say 80s music on yourselves.

It must have substance.

Get well all you broken hearts.

The New Year - The New Stuff

Miss me?

Where have I been keeping myself you might wonder, and wonder you may. The answer being as simple as this:

At work.

Yes I got a gig at a record shop in downtown Edinburgh, selling cd's and dvd's to the fair people of this town. Some purchases were good, others bad. As it goes.

For every three Amy MacDonald cd's sold, one obscure indie record flew out the door. On the other hand, for every ten In Rainbows sold, not one Michael Bolton cd fell off the shelves. The world finds balance in the most honest ways and mysterious places. Good show.

And now the show is over and I find myself back in front of the computer, pondering over my latest findings and how I should mediate them to you, my obscure reader.

I think I shall make it simple and do the following:

The List of Pure Gold, No Less, Goes as Follows.

1. Bishop Allen - try for starters: Eve Of Destruction
2. Black Mountain - suck on: Angels
3. The Boy Least Likely To - high five: Paper Cuts

4. British Sea Power - wink wink at: Waving Flags
5. Cat Power: needs no introduction but stroke gently: Ramblin' Woman
6. Lupe Fiasco: do the hustle cause: Hip-Hop Saved My Life
7. M.I.A.: send off: Paper Planes
8. Pelle Carlberg: serenade and woo: Clever girls like clever boys much more than clever boys like clever girls
9. Seasick Steve - chew on: My Donny

10. Sons and Daughters - kick off you shoes: Darling
11. Stars - go go go: Sleep Tonight
12. Takako Minekawa: purrrr: Fantastic Cat

13. Vampire Weekend - pucker up: Bryn
14. MGMT - slow dance it: Electric Feel
15. Enon - do not disturb: Knock That Door
16. El Perro del Mar: pet and feed: Dog

So go scour. Find your new favorites! I trust you.

Trust me.
